Is this where Marriott hotels get their eggs?

A field visit reveals animal cruelty and unhygienic conditions on a farm that claims to supply hotels such as Marriott in Asia.

We witnessed:

  • Hens crammed into dirty wire cages - unable to stretch their wings, perch or dust bathe;

  • Several birds with severe eye injuries or blindness;

  • Poor access to water.

The problems go beyond animal welfare.

The conditions observed on the farm raise serious concerns about hygiene and potential food safety risks about the eggs produced.

We documented:

  • Swarms of flies surrounding the birds and their food source;

  • Piles of faeces on and underneath the cages;

  • Significant build up of grime and cobwebs on the cages;

  • Dead birds discarded around the farm;

  • Eggs left directly on the floor, surrounded by dirt, feathers and excrement.

Marriott has neither confirmed nor denied that this farm is part of its current supply chain.

Comment on Marriott’s social media channels and ask them if they are cage-free yet

Marriott promised to use only cage-free eggs globally by the end of 2025.

But with that deadline passed and no comment from the company on their progress in the last year, we are left to wonder whether hens in Marriott’s supply chain continue to suffer on farms like this one.

Guests don’t expect their food to come from farms like this.

Conditions like these are the reason that advocacy groups across Asia have been calling on the company to fulfil the cage-free egg commitment they made in 2018.

Whilst advocates have been trying to #HelpMarriottFindAsia, the company hasn't responded to requests to update customers on their progress.

Asians deserve better. Animals deserve better.

It’s time for Marriott to speak up.
